Partnering to foster academic linkages and educational collaboration among these universities
This year’s U6 Plus International conference is themed Research, Innovation & Technology for African Development. It is a multidisciplinary conference.
The U6 Plus consortium is a collaboration of more than seven universities: Cape Peninsula University of Technology; Jaramogi Oginga University of Science and Technology (formerly Bondo University College), Kenya; Kwara State University, Nigeria; The University of The Gambia; University of Cape Coast, Ghana; and University of Ilorin, Nigeria; University of Abuja, Nigeria.
The consortium was launched in 2012 at the University of Ilorin in Ilorin, Nigeria and was established to foster academic linkages and educational collaboration among the six universities.
The consortium has expanded to encompass more than 7 universities since it was launched, but the name has been changed from U6 consortium reflecting the founding six universities to U6 Plus.
The latest university to join the consortium is University of Abuya, Nigeria. There have always been bilateral relationships between the universities, like Nigeria with Ghana, or South Africa with Nigeria. In many instances they had the same collaborations and conferences and that there was more strength in a collaboration between all the universities than just two at a time. The success story has been the establishment of the Herbal Research Centre domiciled at University of Ilorin. Researchers from member institutions have since published 15 scientific articles on a collaborative basis under the U6 Plus consortium.
Member institutions host the U6 Plus International conference on a rotational basis and this year, Cape Peninsula University of Technology is hosting the conference which will be held on the District Six from 10 to 12 September 2024.
The local organising committee of the U6 Plus conference has put out a call for the submission of abstracts in any of the various sub-themes which speak to the main Theme. These are intentionally designed to cover the UN SDGs, Agenda 2063, as well as all Faculties within CPUT as the hosting University.
The sub-themes are:
- Food Security, Health and Wellness
- Education, Equality and Indigenous Knowledge Systems
- ICT, Media & Communication
- Climate Change & the Sustainable Environment
- Business, Leadership and Governance
- Designing for Sustainable Communities
- New Frontiers in Engineering
